Well folks, I am back in the running. Literally. Not often enough, but working back up to it.
I knew we should have gotten our flu shots. It would have probably made every illness shorter. But alas, our family has fallen victim to a terrible cold that is attempting to visit each family member indiscriminately. Happily, it is starting to ebb, and I am once again donning the vestments of a runner, although I am mostly a walker at this point. But walking in my part of the world is pretty nice too. Especially last week.
I was doing my usual route, down the long road that exits our town. I was working up my speed, music blasting from my earphones, when I suddenly detected movement. I would have totally missed it, a sighting that is so rare in many neighborhoods across the world, yet so common in mine. The field I was passing on my right was covered with grazing sheep. The scene stopped me in my tracks.
It never ceases to amaze me, these woolly creatures and their Bedouin masters, so comfortably sharing the terrain with me on just another sunny Middle Eastern day. No visit to any zoo anywhere can compare with the simultaneous thrill and serenity of coming upon such a sight on an ordinary day.
A couple of days later my woolly friends were grazing in the grassy boulevard near the entrance to our town. The three herding dogs played in the sun while their charges scoped out the spoils on the ground. The shepherd and I waved as he chatted on a cell phone, while the dogs approached to greet me. I crossed the road for a closer look at the sheep, but they held no interest in me. The rich, green grass held far more temptation, and I left them to dine amongst the emerald blades. A smile imprinted on my heart, I mostly walked my way home, with an occasional sprint erupting from my extremities. Tired, I returned home for a stretch and a liter of water.

Today is Friday and another shabbos approaches. Challahs must be bought, food must be cooked, and our home must be prepared for the special day ahead. It will be chickens this week, I think. I am definitely not in the mood to be cooking up lamb. :)
Shabbat shalom everyone!!
