We are at war yet again. As rockets rain down on our country, we shop, we swim, we laze. We sip ice coffees and eat ice cream sundaes. We will not let go of the joy of summer.
Just mere kilometers there are thousands of reservists lining up at the Gaza border. They are bombing us and we are bombing them. Friends and sons of friends are among the soldiers awaiting a ground invasion that will put their lives in peril. Mothers are distraught with worry. Aren't all parents on edge when their children are put in harm's way?
With the pursuit of peace comes the search for likeness between us and our enemies. For the most part, we are very much like our Arab counterparts who live and enjoy the freedoms of Israeli citizens, as Israeli citizens. We comfort each other in hospitals, sunbathe on the beaches. But the Palestinians who have embraced the violent ideation of Hamas are not like us. They are not like us at all.
One of humanity's most primal instincts is to safeguard one's offspring. In fact, this instinct is not limited to humanity; it is inborn among the species of the animal kingdom. What parent doesn't run to a screaming child's cries? What parent wouldn't turn back the hands of time to have their deceased child in their loving arms again?
Here is where the haunting, unfathomable truth lurks: there are beings among us who lack even that simple instinct, and they are called Hamas. Hamas places their children between enemy fire and their most precious possessions: their weapons. Horribly, Hamas' offspring are the sacrificial lambs of their parents' dedication to violence. Yet still, they receive millions in US funding.
My heart is broken today for the children whose cursed existence was placed into the hands of those who love death more than they value life. It is a reality that exists just miles from my own loving home that is filled with the miracle of children. Emotionally I am drained, from the unpredictable rocket fire, from being forced to remain close to home during summer vacation, from the murders of three Jewish and one Arab youth, from the heartbreak. I simply struggle with the harsh reality that such beings exist, and that of all the nations we in Israel have the front row seats.
Where is the world in protecting them, in helping us protect them? Talk is cheap among those who spew on social media. We love Israel, we hate Israel; at the end of the day the innocent still suffer and the world stands by while we go it alone on a wing and a prayer.
In the spirit of faith in humanity, I send out my love to all today. Thank you for your prayers.
